Although Maqiao Culture contained various cultural factors, the main residents in Taihu Lake basin in Pre-Qin priod were still the ancient Yue people ,who were the descendants of Liangzhu Cuture. Their history was changed due to the event of “Taibo's Move to Wu” which took place at the end of the Shang Dynasty. It is said that Taibo and Zhongyong, princes of Zhou , came from Zhongyuan of Shanxi to Jiangnan(south Yangtze River area) region to share the same customs and habits with the Yue aborigines and lead them to establish Gouwu State . Meili in Wuxi became the cradle of Wu culture because it was the place where Taibo established his state. By the early BC 5 century, Gouwu state had ever reached its prime ,dominating the central plain and known to history as “The Last Hegemon of Spring and Autumn Period”. However, it was defeated by Yuyue state near Qiantang River, which was also conquered by Chu state from the middle reaches of Yangtze River in BC 4 century . The administrative ownership of Wuxi area was changing with the course of history.
