The original inhabitants of Wuxi can trace back to the upper palaeolithic age about 10,000 or 20,000 years ago. Wuxi entered neolithic age 70,00 years ago and went through periods of Majiabang Cuture, Songze Cuture and Liangzhu Cuture successively. On this swamp plain, which is warm and wet, most of the primitive tribes distributed on hills and mounds of high terrain at the shore of the lake. People earned their economic life mainly by rice agriculture as well as sidelines including fishing, hunting, poultry keeping and handicraft industry. Their persistent working and creation created the process of civilization from clan tribes to an ancient state.
